Love addiction, relationship addiction and sex addiction are closely associated terms that are used interchangeably when we see addictive patterns in a relationship exhibited by either of the partners. Addictive relationship is not a healthy sign, the obsessions about partner, may be positive or negative, and about infidelity or romance is considered a disorder . As obsessions are usually accompanied by compulsions, sooner or later in a relationship, the root cause is mainly the insecurity leading to anxiety when the partners have to stay far away from each other for a number of hours. This sometimes revealed by possessiveness and fear of losing the relationship or intimacy that is highly important for a partner who is suffering from this condition.
Love is free of these irrational thoughts and continuous worry about relationship, romance, partner and related things. There are three types of relationship addiction, yet identified. One is romantic addiction that focuses on thoughts about romance with the partner. Second is sex addiction where sexual pleasure is the priority in a relationship and other issues outside sex is considered unnecessary. Third one is referred to as dependent love . Here addiction is about staying with partner all the time, staying connected and interacting to prevent feelings of loneliness.
There are many reasons that trigger the development of relationship addiction in an individual. The history of the symptoms is settled in childhood often. The child has faced lack of love, attachment and bonding with both or one of the parents in a secure manner. This can happen in variety of situations, when parent is abusive, substance addict, single, missed, absent, away or narcissist and suffering from an illness where they can’t even help loving own children i.e. psychotic/delusional mothers. Child of such parents turn into a delusional/dependent adult most of the times and feels insecure in a relationship hence causing it to be an addiction.
Upon seeing the above-described cases, one can easily recognize if a partner is a victim of this kind of addiction. Other important signals include confusion about the emotional boundaries, feels growing pain and abandonment upon few hours of distance between the partners, feels deprived of love physically or sexually, unable to differentiate love from need or infatuation. Idealizing a partner for having magical abilities to make you happy, having unfair expectations from them and blame then when they fail to show the expected behavior, this is an extreme situation you can observe while experiencing with someone who has relationship addiction .
