A question I get asked a lot is what to do when you are bored of meditating. It is also one of the hardest questions for me to answer as it is something that varies from person to person. Luckily, practicing meditation can come in many different forms! These are a few ways to change up your meditation habits that I find renew interest in meditating.
1. Do a different meditation.
I find that, even though it is simple, a lot of people don’t try different meditations before giving up. If you are doing a guided meditation, try using a different one. If you are not using a guided meditation, try changing your focus in your meditations. On top of doing a different meditation, you can try meditating in a different location. I find that these simple changes are helpful for battling boredom in meditation.
2. Ask for help.
A lot of people that come to me tell me that they were afraid to ask for help. The problem is that if you are afraid to ask for help, you won’t receive any. There is no shame in needing help as everyone needs help at some point. Find someone you trust who can offer you advice and help with your problems. They might be able to help you find new ways to meditate and bring back your interest in meditation.
3. Don’t let meditation be a solitary experience.
While meditation should be a personal experience, it doesn’t mean it has to be solitary. Bring friends into your practice with you. Talk to them about your meditations, what you find useful, and what you enjoy. You might find that they could use help or need advice. You could end up being the person who renews someone else’s interest. I love being able to interact with other people who love meditating and often I learn new things!
Those three easy steps are what I find most useful in helping people renew their interest in meditation and change up their practice. If you have other ways that you find helps to renew interest in meditation, don’t be afraid to share it with others!
